Happily Married or Trouble in Paradise?: Secular & Spiritual Education in 14th c. Byzantium

The Centre for Hellenic Studies at the University of New Brunswick, with the generous support of the Department of Philosophy and the Faculty of Education at UNB Fredericton Campus, invites the university community to a captivating, public lecture by Rev. Fr. Matthew Penney, Faculty of Education at Queen’s University and parish priest at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Saint John, N.B., entitled, "Happily Married or Trouble in Paradise?: Secular & Spiritual Education in 14th c. Byzantium."

Fr. Matthew Penney will introduce us to a period in the History of Education that is almost completely unknown in North America. He will explore the diverse world views of secular and spiritual education in the Eastern Roman Empire (AD 330-1453) - commonly known as Byzantium –highlight the ensuing  tensions and clashes, present the solutions put forth by one of the foremost scholars of his time, Saint Gregory Palamas (1296-1359), and offer contemporary parallels.

This is a free public event and all are welcome!
